Internal
Produced to accompany the installation 'Internal' by artist Andy Singleton. Andy's exhibition description reads as follows: "Stripping back the walls between the inner and outer worlds to explore the boundaries between our physical bodies and our conscious mind. Beneath our skin the interconnected networks that are contained within our bodies, delving beneath the skin to reveal the beauty and mystery of our internal world." For the music, I tried to capture a sense of the 'internal' being called to the outside and experiencing a sense of wonder, before returning to contemplation. Andy and I spoke about the sense of self and individuality being a construct of our own making, when in reality we are all simply part of one fluidly interconnected universe. I made use of sample manipulation and electronic instruments, including a recreation of the ancient carnyx, a wind instrument of the Iron Age Celts, used between 200BC and 200AD. Samples of breathing recorded with a stethoscope microphone were also used. Please enjoy the track, and take any opportunity you may have to see Andy's exhibition in person.
